What to know about TMC BioPort

The campus will be called TMC BioPort and is still in the early stages of development.

Here are some things to know about the upcoming campus and other TMC expansions:

Why is the TMC BioPort being built?

TMC has been trying to grow its presence in the life sciences ecosystem in recent years, and the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need to further grow in that area.

According to TMC President and CEO Bill McKeon, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the risk of relying on offshore manufacturing as many hospitals struggled to secure personal protective equipment and other critical supplies.

Having a biomanufacturing and medical supply center in Houston would help the region and other areas of the country avoid similar problems in the future, McKeon told Chronicle reporter Evan MacDonald.

The TMC BioPort campus will be in a part of southwest Houston near the intersection of Holmes Rd. and Buffalo Speedway, just west of Wildcat Golf Club, according to the report.

The medical center has a contract to buy the land, but McKeon declined to identify the owners or discuss the potential sale price while negotiations take place.

When will it be built?

While development is in the early stages, McKeon predicted that the TMC BioPort buildings could be under construction within two years.

What kind of jobs will the BioPort create?

The consultancy Economic & Planning Systems estimates that TMC BioPort will create 100,000 new jobs. Although specific jobs have not yet been posted, McKeon said the jobs won’t just be for people with doctorates and will include a job training center intended to offer jobs for students coming out of high school.

“These are really great careers that you could have for the rest of your life,” McKeon said.

Along with TMC BioPort, the medical center also broke through last year at TMC3, an ambitious 37-acre biomedical research campus with shops and parks shaped like DNA. TMC3 is located just outside the Texas Medical Center along the Old Spanish Trail, about five miles south of downtown Houston. Texas A&M is also building a $550 million complex at the TMC which will occupy 5.5 acres on the southern edge of the medical center’s main campus. It will comprise an 18-story academic building for the specialty engineering medicine program in which Texas A&M and Houston Methodist partner; a 19-story student housing building; and a 30-story medical office building, all bearing the A&M logo.
