Riverwoods, Ill. | $1,099 million
An International Style home built in 1964, with three bedrooms and three and a half baths, on a 1.25 acre lot
This house was designed by Philip Thrane, a student of Mies van der Rohe, whose much admired Farnsworth House is just over an hour away. Like that house, this one was meant to blur the lines between inside and out, with sheets of glass offering views of the surrounding woods, giving the main spaces a front row seat to the changing seasons. While it feels remarkably private, this property is only 10 minutes from shopping centers with grocery stores and other conveniences.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 20 minutes away; downtown Chicago is a 40-minute drive away. Milwaukee is an hour’s drive north.
Size: 2,405 square feet
Price per square foot: $457
Indoors: A long driveway leads from the street to the garage at the side of the house. The front door, in the center of the building, opens into a vestibule partially closed off by a built-in room divider. Beyond is an open living room with hardwood floors, a fireplace set in a sand-colored stone wall, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the ever-changing landscape outside.
Another divider separates the living room from the dining room. Both bedrooms have access to a spacious kitchen that was recently updated with stainless steel appliances and a waterfall island topped with white stone. More windows look out onto the backyard and the garden and forest beyond.
A hallway off the dining room leads to the master bedroom, which has patio access and an en-suite bathroom with a double vanity and elegant glass-enclosed shower. A sunny home office and powder room are also located on this side of the house.
Two more bedrooms are across from the kitchen. Both have a bathroom and one has a large dressing room.
Outdoor space: The patio behind the house is large enough for a table and chairs on one side and a sitting area on the other. The front and back yards are landscaped with lawns surrounded by trees, and the house sits in the center of the lot. The attached garage has room for two cars.
Taxes: $14,532 (estimated) and a monthly HOA fee of $25
