Can you tell us a bit about your background?

The vast majority of my career has been in the 3PL global supply chain and logistics industry. I have over 20 years of experience in this industry and it has been exciting to witness all the ways it has changed and evolved during that time.

I am currently Regional Managing Director – North West Europe at Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK, where I have been for five years, using the knowledge I have gained throughout my career to identify emerging industry trends and ensure that Rhenus stays ahead of the curve. of new ideas, technology and approaches.

What does your company do? / What is your USP?

Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK is a logistics specialist providing sustainable warehousing, fulfillment and returns processing to multi-channel retailers and brands in a variety of sectors.

The company was originally founded in 1990 as Core Management Logistics (CML), before being acquired by Rhenus in 2019 and becoming part of the Rhenus Group, which is one of the leading logistics specialists with global business operations and an annual turnover of 7 billion euros. Over the last 30 years, Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK has built a base of experience, ensuring that the company is a leader in the industry.

Rhenus currently operates out of four warehouses at Magna Park in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, and is in the process of expanding to Nuneaton, Warwickshire with two new sustainable warehouses which together will be known as the ‘Rhenus Campus’.

Upon completion, the development will earn ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ certification, demonstrating Rhenus’ commitment to creating a highly sustainable environment that also enhances the health and well-being of employees. The site will fully adhere to the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) net-zero operating carbon framework, following on-site generation from solar panels, air source heat pumps and a spot-fitted car park electric car charging.

Rhenus is also working with a local sawmill to recycle trees felled from the site to ensure nothing goes to waste. The wood will be used to make furniture, including picnic tables for employees to enjoy, boxes for bats and birds, houses for hedgehogs, and habitat boards for local wildlife.

Service implementation always starts with knowing the customer and their needs. We pride ourselves on taking a personalized approach and providing personalized service to each of our clients, so that period of learning what they need from us for their business to thrive is essential.

Once we have that information, we use our experience in project management and governance to constantly ensure we meet client needs, relying on our experienced people, efficient structures and reliable systems, such as process flow mapping.

We measure our success by how well we meet the needs of each individual customer and we are always looking for ways to improve our service.

What challenges and opportunities do you see in UK retail for 2023? What challenges are retailers facing in 2022?

Some of the challenges we see in the UK for both the retail and logistics sectors are net zero carbon emissions, the rising cost of energy and labour, and obtaining the space needed to meet the increasing customer needs.

We are also very aware that the rising cost of living is likely to have an impact on consumer demand. This type of market uncertainty makes forecasting for retailers and stock holding more of a challenge than it would be in more stable periods.

How will you address these challenges and turn them into successes?

Rhenus is preparing to meet these challenges in several ways. Our new development at Nuneaton will help clients achieve their sustainability goals, while a full suite of sensors and Building Information Modeling create a “digital twin” to support the commitment to transparency at all times.

Measures taken at new sites to promote biodiversity, such as planting native hedges, ornamental and native shrubs, providing homes for birds, bats and insects, and planting 700-900 native trees in nurseries, will also help customers to reduce their overall impact on the environment.

We also stay at the forefront of industry innovation by embracing automation, which gives us the scalability to meet ever-changing customer demands.

What is on the horizon for you as a company?

We have big plans for the future. Rhenus has committed to reducing its direct emissions by 60 percent by 2030. This is the first step on our journey to achieve net zero carbon emissions, which is a Rhenus Group initiative to achieve by 2045.

We also aspire to be more competitive through the adoption of technological innovation, careful work planning and constant improvement of our processes to make them more efficient.
